About the Documentary

PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR: BEYOND THE MASK explores the life of the first African American poet to gain national and international fame. Dunbar's groundbreaking work bridged literature and music—from his collaboration on the first all-Black Broadway musical to his poetry being set to music by Abbey Lincoln and Paul Robeson. This Emmy Award-winning documentary traces his meteoric rise, his complex relationship with dialect poetry, and his fearless critiques of lynching and Jim Crow laws. Featuring funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the film has screened internationally and at institutions including the Library of Congress and the National Civil Rights Museum.
